Water works control systems are increasingly communicating with business systems in order to more efficiently plan maintenance and schedule crews, purchase spare parts, and serve real-time information to large end users. These efficiencies can result in substantial savings for water utilities. Interconnection begs the question of security though, and many utilities are expressing serious concerns over conventional firewall-based security measures. Though they may look like hardware, firewalls are essentially software artifacts, with all the complexity, limitations and vulnerabilities of software. Many utilities are considering Unidirectional Security Gateways as an alternative. The gateways permit information to flow out of otherwise isolated networks, without allowing any information at all back into those networks. The gateways allow information about equipment usage, inventories, and service levels to be used profitably in business networks, without putting at risk the safety or availability of the control system components controlling critical physical processes. Join us to learn how Unidirectional Gateways work, and how they can be applied to secure water networks absolutely from attacks originating on external networks.
