Mud valves have been used to drain tanks and basins in water and wastewater treatment plants for many years.  However, since these valves are submerged, they are subject to corrosion. Stainless mud valves are proving to be a cost effective option, providing additional years of service life.

Valve position indicators can be installed in a valve box for a buried valve, or also inside a treatment plant. They provide the operator visual indication of the valve’s position. Currently, many operators rely on "feel” to determine when to stop applying torque. Excessive torque can break a valve stem, requiring excavation or tank draining for a repair. Valve position indicators are also available with debris shields, to keep dirt out of the valve box and keeping the position indicator legible.

The trend towards radio read meter systems has presented challenges for systems using meter pits. Since cast iron lids block radio signals, alternative materials are required. Many plastic lids allow radio signals to pass through, but lack the strength to withstand heavy loads. Trumbull Industries has developed a composite polymer lid that is "AMR friendly”, yet is capable of handling a 40,000 # traffic load.
