Hello Trustees, Board members and Committee Chairs,
The YP Committee is discussing eliminating our unfilled Vice-Chair position and adding 5 "YP District Rep" positions (we haven't selected role descriptions yet, so this is a temporary description) for each District. Proposed advantages of this re-structure:
• Better involvement over the whole state
• More entry points for section involvement with the easiest (and arguably the funnest!) committee
• More titled YP positions
o May create a larger pool of interested candidates to fill the Chair position (which is has occasionally been difficult to find because of the built-in turnover of a YP group)
• Possible increased participation of YP Operators, which has, historically, been difficult for us to attract and retain
Participation in the YPs gives the participant 2 things:
• A line on the YPs resume
• An opportunity to show that you are a contributor when you network at events
By creating a few more opportunities to take the lead on events planning and an increase in the titled positions within the committee, we hope to add value for the active YP member with these new positions. To my knowledge, there are no bi-laws or rules about how the YP committee is organized that keeps us from eliminating positions and creating new roles and titles.
The "YP District Rep" is expected to organize one social and one technical/educational event per year. We don't want to set a young/new member up for failure, so we're looking for Trustees (or others) to help the YP make some initial contacts with companies or members in the area. Also, we will need some help encouraging existing OP members to point their YPs at the "YP District Rep" function, especially because our current YP member base is Chicagoland-centric and has done a poor job drumming up the interest and support outside of District 2. We have a Committee member, Cameron Jones, that is ready and willing to represent YPs in District 3, but we do not have candidates in Districts 1, 5, or 4 at this time.
The only Con that I can think of in my pro-con list is that we won't find people to fill this role and the status-quo will persist. I would like to mitigate this risk by engaging the local District-level support of the Trustees. Your thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated, and I look forward to talking to you on the next all committee call, June 4th.
