Title: The Application of Activated Carbon in Municipal Drinking Water

Activated carbon has been used in drinking water treatment plants for decades, to treat a variety of contaminants. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) was initially introduced over fifty years ago to treat taste and odor issues. Later, granular activated carbon (GAC) was introduced as a more efficient means of applying activated carbon. In more recent years, activated carbon has been used to treat both groundwater and surface water to remove a range of contaminants, from pesticides to volatile organic compounds (VOC). Most recently, this technology has been used to help drinking water utilities comply with US-EPA regulations regarding disinfection byproducts (DBP). On the horizon, activated carbon is also seen as a viable means to provide a barrier against emerging contaminants, such as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC) and pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCP).

This training seminar will provide a phased learning experience for attendees. We begin with the basics of activated carbon; what it is, and how it works. The second presentation provides a detailed explanation of how the use of GAC can be optimized through the practice of thermal reactivation. Three additional presentations then cover how activated carbon can be employed to treat for DBPs, EDCs and PPCPs, and taste and odor challenges, the three primary drinking water applications for activated carbon.

PRESENTERS:  Leo Zappa & Gary Gunnerson, Calgon Carbon
