A Little More Science and a Little Less Art WEBINAR

IEPA#6800

WEBINAR TYPE:
Technical Webinar

SUMMARY: Control of the coagulation process has relied for nearly 100 years on use of the jar test. Jar testing remains the most fundamental test for estimating coagulant dosage. There is no question a great deal of the value of the jar test lies in the ability of the laboratory technician/operator to learn to properly interpret the jar test and apply the results to the treatment process. However, too often subjective judgement, the art of operation, is weighed too heavily and more objective measurement are not used enough. Modern tools permit control of coagulant dose to be much more governed by measurement and much less dependent on the skill of the operator. This presentation will focus on some of the tools that are now available and their usefulness including pH, turbidity, streaming current measurement, zeta potential, filtration tests, temperature control of the jar test with a water bath and other techniques. Coagulation control is still somewhat an art but a strong dose of objective scientific measurement will make process control more consistent and cost effective.
