#1 Optimized Treatment Strategies to Meet Stage 2 D/DBP Rule
With the promulgation of the Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproduct (D/DBP) Rule, water systems have been preparing to meet the Stage 2 DBP limits. In some cases, major capital improvements have been required at water treatment plants to achieve compliance. On the other hand, optimization and modifications at several treatment plants have proven to be cost effective and reliable in achieving compliance. Optimization is a combination of steps and can take many forms. The goal is to customize a strategy to minimize the formation of DBPs within existing treatment processes. Key areas typically include increasing Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removal and modifying the existing disinfection practice. This paper will describe the optimized treatment strategies for different water treatment plants (WTP) in the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa. Each plant treats water from the Mississippi River; however, each treatment process and strategy is different. #2 Optimized Water Tower and Distribution System Modeling
With recent upgrades to modeling software and upcoming deadlines looming for the Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproduct (D/DBP) Rule, water systems have been preparing to meet the Stage 2 DBP limits by evaluating distribution system improvements. Properly developed and calibrated models are useful tools to simulate water age and chlorine residuals in the water system, both spatially and seasonally. Such models can be further used to predict DBP formation and evaluate proposed improvements and operational modifications. Models allow fairly quick screening of alternatives to identify the most cost effective solutions for reducing water age, maintaining proper disinfection levels, and reducing DBP's. This paper will describe Distribution System Modeling and use of available model results/data such as chlorine residuals to evaluate Stage 2 D/DBP alternatives and costs. Specific modeling steps and lessons learned will be discussed.
