Drinking Water Quality in Hospitals & Other Buildings

CEU TYPE: Technical
WEBINAR TYPE:
Technical
IEPA#: 7919

Summary: Drinking water quality entering large buildings is generally adequately controlled by the water utility, but localized problems may occur within building or "premise” plumbing. Particular concerns are loss of disinfectant residual and temperature variability, which may enhance pathogen activity and metallic corrosion. Disinfection systems are available to building managers and are being installed in a variety of commercial buildings (hospitals, hotels, office buildings.) Yet our understanding of such additional treatment and of how to monitor end water quality at these buildings is limited. Furthermore, installation of in-building treatment triggers monitoring requirements under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), which are not always recognized or understood. This webinar will discuss challenges in maintaining acceptable water quality in hospitals and other buildings, as well as requirements of the SDWA for in-building water treatment systems

INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Simoni Triantafyllidou
Dr. Triantafyllidou is a post-doctoral research fellow at the US EPA Office of Research and Development in Cincinnati, OH. Some of her recent research involves field investigations of inorganic drinking water contaminants at distribution systems and large buildings. Her research interests include aquatic chemistry, corrosion science, drinking water quality/treatment, sustainable drinking water infrastructure and public health. Simoni earned her MS and PhD degrees in Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech, where she accumulated research experience on the corrosion of drinking water plumbing. She has authored and co-authored more than 20 publications on various scientific aspects of this problem. Dr. Triantafyllidou is the recipient of First Place MS Thesis Awards by AEESP (Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors) and AWWA (American Water Works Association), an Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award by AEESP, and a Best Paper Award in journal Environmental Science and Technology.
