ABSTRACTS & HANDOUTS

Insertion Valves and Linestop Benefits and Methodologies
Dennis Bowe, Advanced Valve Technologies, Inc.

The presentation will describe the methodologies and benefits of insertion valves and linestops. Several types of insertion valves and linestop will be described. It is anticipated that more than one manufacturer representative will present this topic.

How To Do More With Less
Alexandria Caputo & Daniel Millen, MGP, Inc

Technology is constantly innovating and enhancing workflows in all industries.  For local governments, who are often being asked to do more with less, these technologies can be critical assets to make staff more effective and efficient with getting the job done.  In this presentation, you will see how the GIS Consortium, a group of 32 regional municipalities that share resources, services, and ideas, utilize Esri's mobile Collector application to assist with improving water system management from out in the field, to back in the office, and beyond.

The AWWA Water Audit: A simple "How to" perform an Audit
John Van Arsdel, M.E. Simpson Company, Inc.

This presentation focuses on a short, simple "how to perform a water audit". A step by step process will be outlined as well as citing a few case studies from actual Water Audits that have been performed. A review of other states' use of the Water Audit Format will be included so that utilities will be able to see why water losses cannot always be accurately identified strictly by percentage indicators. Utilities can see how this AWWA Water Audit can work in their favor in identifying recoverable water losses and revenue losses.

Understanding the ISO Fire Suppression Rating Schedule - Water Supply Evaluation
Michael Ramirez, Insurance Services Office, Inc.

Training for this presentation will review the Water Supply section of the FSRS including what constitutes a recognized system, , supply works , hydrant credit- based on hydrant size & type, inspection and flow testing. Training for this presentation will also include calculating a building's Needed Fire Flow (NFF) using ISO's NFF formula that is overseen by ISO's risk engineering division.

Reliable Water Supply During Major Tollway Reconstruction
Joe Fennell, Burns & McDonnell Engineers

The Northwest Suburban Municipal Joint Action Water Agency (NSMJAWA) has undertaken a program along with the Ill. Toll Highway Authority to relocate approximately 7 miles of large diameter (30" to 90") pipe adjacent to and in conjunction with the reconstruction of the Jane Addams Tollway (I-90).  The project included the reconnection of new pipe at 14 locations, abandonment of 33,000 feet of pipe, two large diameter hot taps (72", 90"), land acquisition and coordination with dozens of ongoing construction contracts within the same right of way.    The project required full and continuous operation of I-90 and the uninterrupted water service to a daytime population of 500,000 people in seven suburban communities.  Design and construction coordination was required not only with the Toll Highway Authority but also with several design consultants, existing utilities, railroad operations and environmental constraints.

Water Main CIPP Rehabilitation - Challenges and Opportunities
Sean O'Dell, Baxter & Woodman, Inc.

Water main lining using cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) technology has gained traction in Illinois over the past five years.  This trenchless technology is a green alternative to standard open cut. Reduced water funds, aging underground infrastructure, and increase in construction costs have forced utilities to look for other cost effective ways of improving water systems. Challenges include temporary water service, services, fire suppression, and IEPA permitting.  Opportunities include the reduction of project cost, disturbance and traffic delays and increasing the annual rehabilitation footage.   This presentation will discuss the process, challenges, opportunities, and finish with case studies and lessons learned.

Principles and Applications of Hydraulic Modeling in Water Distribution Systems
Hsing-Hua Chu & Paul St. Aubyn, Aecom Water

Hydraulic modeling principles will be discussed with an emphasis on their role in distribution system operations. Case studies will then be presented where these hydraulic modeling principles were applied to real-world situations to aid design, support operations, and improve system performance.

The Value of Comprehensive Leak Detection:  An Innovative approach to Reducing Real Water Loss
Wayne Pratt, Wachs Water Services

Increasingly, utilities are seeking to reduce NRW to sustainable levels through the implementation of leak detection programs.   Scarcity of water resources in many areas of the country has dramatically escalated the importance and cost of real loss.  This is new and highly effective approach that includes the utilization of both internal and external tools and processes that capture asset inventory and condition data while identifying and meaningfully reducing real water loss in distribution systems.
