A Sticky Situation—Exploring Novel Management Techniques for Combating the Invasive Zebra Mussel

IEPA#: 10803

Summary: Recently, the United States has been plagued by an unexpectedly devastating organism: the zebra mussel. Many detrimental problems are caused by the mussel's unique super glue- a fiber called a byssus thread. This presentation will explore areas of biology, chemistry, material science, and environmental science in a showcase of novel techniques developed for combating zebra mussels.

Presenter: Nicholas Ieremciuc is a student at Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois. As a researcher, his focus has been on using biochemical investigation to explore new ways of approaching zebra mussel management. As a frequent science fair competitor and recent presenter at WATERCON 2016, he hopes to introduce ideas that will help the Midwest—and the entire country—fight off invasive mussels.

This webinar will begin at 12:00pm and conclude by 1:00pm CDT. Earn up to 1 PDH or RTC hour. After registering with Illinois Section AWWA, attendees will be furnished via email with all materials and links needed to participate in the webinar. Questions? Call 866-521-3595 Ext. 3
