The 2017 Annual Conference & Exposition (ACE) will be the fourteenth year for the “Fresh Ideas” Poster Session that has been jointly developed by the Manufacturers/Associates Council (MAC) and the Young Professionals Committee (YP). The goal of this event is to encourage new presenters at the Section conferences, with the best presentation from a first-time participant at each Section conference being recognized as the “Fresh Ideas” award winner. The winner is guaranteed a poster presentation at ACE to represent their Section in the “Fresh Ideas” Poster Session. ACE17 will take place in Philadelphia, PA on June 11-14, 2017.
In 2016, we had 23 Sections participate in this event. The 2010 second place winner, Tara Clancy, Michigan Section, said this about the Fresh Ideas YP Poster Session: “These interactions are important for the future of this industry and provide a unique environment for the exchange of ideas.”
If your section wants to start a Fresh Ideas Poster Competition, AWWA has a How to Guide, sample scoring sheets, and more. Contact Nancy Sullivan for more information.
AWWA also provides guidelines for posters which can be found on our presenter resources webpage.
“Fresh Ideas” posters can cover a variety of topics for all segments of our membership and stimulate new members from all areas of the water industry to become part of the conference experience. Some Sections select from among presenters in all the technical sessions, while some choose from presenters in specific “Fresh Ideas” sessions ─ whatever best fits within your Section conference program. We are encouraging the Section MAC and Section Young Professionals Committees to develop a supplemental award with a stipend to help defray the travel and lodging costs for the “Fresh Ideas” winner to attend ACE. Additionally, “Fresh Ideas” poster presenters receive a full complimentary ACE registration to help defray costs.
AWWA has also set aside a number of sleeping rooms at the more cost effective hotels for Fresh Idea Poster Competitors. AWWA is keenly aware of the costs of participating in competitions, and we want to try and help reduce the financial load on sections. We would recommend that you go ahead and secure a room for your winner today; even if you don’t know who it is yet. You can book the room thru this link. You can always cancel a hotel room. It is not always so easy to find one. More information on AWWA conference hotels can be found here.
We’ve blocked rooms at both the:
Embassy Suites - $222 (includes breakfast & reception)
The Residence Inn - $219 (includes breakfast)
When you or your winner book the room make sure you select one of the two options above.
Sections that are participating in the “Fresh Ideas” Poster Session at ACE are requested to provide the information below to Nancy Sullivan, email@example.com by May 5, 2017.
The information needed includes:
NOTE: If your Section conference falls after May 5th, you can still provide an entry winner. Simply let Nancy Sullivan know, and we will hold a place for your YP Fresh Ideas Winner at ACE. You may let the presenters know that you have reserved them a spot in the “Fresh Ideas” Poster Session, and that AWWA will ask them to confirm or decline their participation.
Please let all the participants know that the Fresh Ideas Poster Competition will not technically be finalized until May 5, 2017. All information on poster presenters will appear in the ACE Program Addendum − not in the original program.
All “Fresh Ideas” posters will be displayed in the poster presentation area located in the Exhibit Hall. Poster presenters are requested to set up their poster (Tuesday, June 13thfrom 9:45 a.m. - noon), and be available for question-and-answer periods on that same day.
The “Fresh Ideas” posters will be reviewed by a panel of volunteer judges consisting of MAC members, YPs and others. The first place winner also has the opportunity to have an article printed in the AWWA Journal, and attend the Water Industry Lunch at ACE, and a $500 taxable stipend. First, second, and third place ribbons will be awarded at the conference.
We would like to thank you for your participation in the fourteenth year of this program and look forward to growing participation in the future.
