Alternative Approaches Meet Tight Time Frame for Iron and Radium Removal

In response to both elevated iron and radium in the water supply, the City of Loves Park added advanced iron filtration with hydrous manganese oxide (HMO) addition at Well No. 6. This system allows iron and radium to be removed in the same vessel to save space and allow for faster construction. Notable aspects of the project include design of the original well house for future expansion to include an HMO facility, direct purchase of the HMO equipment outside the bid to meet a tight construction schedule, the high level of automation of the HMO feed and filtration process, and disposal of filter backwash waste.
