The word hero gets kicked around a lot today. Movie stars, celebrities, sports figures
– famous, beautiful, talented people whose names are easy to recognize. Veterans,
police officers, and teachers get called heroes a lot too... But are they really heroes?
Join retired Navy Captain and all-around BattleAxe Karen Baetzel as we take another look at what has happened to the word “hero” and hear her take on the very nature of heroism through four true stories, which might make you think of your own story in the water industry.

Karen Baetzel has a unique background of military, non-profit, and corporate leadership and has dedicated her efforts to sharing the lessons of servant leadership and inspired living, both to pay it back and pay it forward.

Capt. Baetzel retired after 30 years of commissioned service in the United States Navy,
as one of the Navy’s most senior female Naval Aviators. She is also one of the few Naval Aviators of either gender to qualify as an Aircraft Commander in fly helicopters, propeller and jet aircraft, amassing more than 2,000 military flight hours in six aircraft types and serving aboard seven ships.

After her Commanding Officer tour, she served on the elite Navy Leadership Training
Team for senior officers, and specialized in defense emergency preparedness and disaster response. Karen also specialized in defense emergency preparedness and disaster response, serving at the state level and in the Offices of the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon. She was a military responder to numerous national emergencies, including the 9/11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina.

She is a former newspaper columnist, certified international mediator, and co-author
of three books. She has co-authored or contributed to books including World’s Best
Kept Public Speaking Secrets with Peter Fogel in 2009, Stepping Stones to Success,
coauthored with Deepak Chopra, Jack Canfield, and Dr. Denis Waitley, published in 2010, and Military Fly Moms, published in 2012. Karen holds undergraduate degrees in Business Management and Economics and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the prestigious Naval War College.

After successful engagements in the corporate world, Karen went on to found her own
business, BattleAxe Consulting Services in 2007. She now serves an international client base in leadership training and development, and homeland security and defense consulting.
