New Champion Crowned, Can You Say 3-peat?

I would like to express a big congratulation to all of the competitors who participated this year. I would especially like to thank Neptune Technologies for sponsoring the event this year. A big "Thank You” to all of the volunteers who help to make this event run smoothly during the competition and thanks to Jeff Morris, our National Meter Madness Chair, for officiating this competition.

This year’s competitor included, David Yelton – Village of Downers Grove, Randy Tachow – Village of Westmont, Kevin Zook – Mountain Valley MHP, Edward Cheng (newcomer) - Windsor Dental, Kirk Nix-Village of Westmont, and Keith Dollas-Village of Itasca. All of them did an outstanding job.

Once the contestants went through preliminary rounds we had our semi finalist set for a battle. Kevin, Dave, Edward and Kirk all faced off to see which two would make it to the championship round.

Times in the semi were as follows:

  • Kevin had a 1:06:19 (no penalties)
  • Edward had a 55:88 (no penalties)
  • Dave had a 1:12:40 (no penalties)
  • Kirk had a 1:37:28 (with a 10 second penalty)

It came down to Edward and Kevin moving into the championship round. Both had a few issues in the preliminary and semi rounds but recovered to make it to the championship round.

In the championship round, Kevin flew right through assembling his meter in a time of 48:06! (Prior to the competition he told me that if he won he wanted to fish in the Atlantic.) Edward finished his round with an impressive 57:24. After close scrutiny by our two meter judges, Randy Lusk and Todd Schaefer from M.E. Simpson on testing and assembly of both meters, our competitor’s times stood without any penalties! Congratulations to Kevin Zook the 2014 ISAWWA Meter Madness Champion! (This was his third championship in the last several years!) Kevin, Boston bound to represent ISAWWA?

Next year will be here before you know it. Remember, you don’t have to be involved with water meters – anyone can compete! (Ask Edward!) I look forward to seeing all of you next year at the competition. If you need to contact me, please email me Bruce Vaickus, at or you may contact next year’s Co-chair Dave Yelton, at
