Illinois Section AWWA - E-Splash - February 2014

You Can Help Shape The Future Of The Illinois Section AWWA
Laurie Dougherty, Executive Director

"At its essence, every organization is a product of how its members think and interact." Senge, Kleiner, Roberts, Ross and Smith: The Fifth Discipline.

Not only does this apply to the members itself, but, it applies at a much larger scale to the Board Members who lead this organization. We are looking to the future generations to continue to lead us in our mission ofproviding resources for the management and advocacy of safe and sustainable water. The Illinois Section AWWA needs you to consider a role in the future of this organization. We are clarifying the paths on how to become more involved as well as making an effort to inform the members more thoroughly of the process for becoming an officer. If you read the article in this issue from Chris Ulm, Trustee at Large, you will see the Section is considering expanding the opportunities for representation in our most populated areas.

At the January Board meeting, the Illinois Section Board discussed a new policy for nominating procedures. Following are the new procedures that will be proposed for approval at the March Board meeting:

1. At the first Board meeting with new officers, the Chair shall appoint the nominating committee according to the bylaws. The Executive Director as an ex-officio member of all committees shall participate in the meetings but have no vote. (April)

2. The Nominating Committee shall contact the full membership via email, website posting and Splash within 60 days for suggestions as to possible nominations. An online form shall be utilized to track all nominations, whether submitted by an individual or on behalf of another individual. Suggestions may or may not be accepted by the Committee. (before July)

3. The Executive Director shall prepare a summary of the nominees including information on their current or past involvement in the industry. The Executive Director in coordination with the Nominating Committee Chair shall schedule a conference call of the Nominating Committee to review the nominations. (August)

4. The Nominating Committee shall meet and review nominations submitted in the current year as well as previous nominations and determine a slate of candidates. (September)

5. The Nominating Committee shall prepare the email to be sent by the Executive Director to candidates regarding acceptance or non-acceptance. Email notification to be sent prior to fall Board meeting. (September)

6. Prior to making its selection ofnominees presented at the Fall Board meeting, the Nominating Committee Chair shallsecure from each proposed nominee his/her agreement to serve and willingness to accept the obligation of the office, if elected. (September)

7. The names of the candidates are submitted for inclusion in the fall Board meeting package. The slate of candidates will be approved by the Board at the fall Board meeting. (October)

8. The Executive Director will obtain biography information as well as pictures for the election package to be sent to all members. (November)

9. The election package shall be sent to the members no later than December 1, for a deadline of voting of December 31.

We encourage you to get involved at the committee level. The committees of the Illinois Section AWWA are where the rubber meets the road. We need your ideas, your opinions and your experiences to share for a greater purpose - safe and sustainable water. Each of you has a unique set of ideas and a different point of view. All of those points of view brought together in a common effort is what will continue our Association into the future. Involvement at the committee level gives you a broader understanding of how the Association operates, opportunity to network with your peers, opportunity to develop new group facilitation skills, and a basis in which to take the next step in leading the Association as an officer.

If you would like to talk in more detail about what's involved, what committees and or trustee positions will be open, just give me a call anytime. I can be reached at 866-521-3595 ext. 1 or email welcome you to stop in and observe any future Board or committee meeting to get a better understanding of the commitment and effort that would be required.
