Kristin Rehg, Chair
STUDENT PROGRAMS AT WATERCON 2014:
MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF WATER PROFESSIONALS
The Outreach Committee is
dedicated to providing meaningful and beneficial student activities at
WATERCON, in conjunction with the Young Professionals Committee and our IWEA
counterparts. Our goals are to help
students make connections within ISAWWA that will lead them to pursue
water-related careers and become involved in the Section. To this end, WATERCON 2014 will host the most
comprehensive student program in the conference’s history.
Student events on March 18
include a poster presentation session (with prizes!), a scavenger hunt through
the Exhibit Hall, and a networking activity at the Young Professionals Reception
to help the students meet and learn from experienced members of ISAWWA. Activities on March 19 include leadership
workshops on career planning and public speaking, as well as a career fair and
mock interview sessions to prepare students for entering the job market. See the WATERCON Student Activities page at https://isawwa.site-ym.com/?StudentInfo
for the full program.
We are in need of volunteers for several of these events.
activity: ISAWWA members who have
been active in the Section (such as holding positions on committees or
serving on the Board) to relate their experiences volunteering for the
Section and working in the water industry.
interviews: Volunteers who are
experienced in interviewing new hires to run through typical interview
questions that students may encounter while job hunting, and then to
provide feedback to the students on their performance.
fair: Consulting firms, water
system service providers, equipment vendors, public and private utilities,
and operator training programs are encouraged to exhibit at the career
fair. Whether or not you are hiring
at that time, you can still provide valuable information to students on
the qualifications and skills needed to get a job in the water industry.
Contact Kristin Rehg at email@example.com if you
would like to participate in the networking activity or mock interviews. Contact Laurie Frieders at ExecMgr@iweasite.org if you would like
to exhibit at the career fair.
REMEMBER, a large segment of our membership is nearing
retirement age. It will take the efforts
of many people throughout the Section to attract a motivated, capable, and
diverse stream of young people to start filling the gaps that will be left over
the next 5 to 10 years. Please consider
volunteering your time to interact with students at WATERCON or other outreach
events. Besides helping out the Section
and the water industry, you just might make a connection with an eager student
that will give you the satisfaction of helping someone personally.
