Meter Madness 2013
Bruce Vaickus, Committee Chair
like to express my sincere congratulations to all of the competitors who
participated in Meter Madness at this year’s Watercon. I would especially like to thank Badger
Meters for sponsoring the event this year, and extend a big "Thank You” to all of the volunteers. You help to make this event run smoothly
during the competition. Thanks to Jeff
Morris, our National Meter Madness Chair, for officiating this competition.
Yelton – Village of Downers Grove; Randy Tachow – Village of Westmont; Kevin
Zook – Zook Enterprises; and Jeff Barrett
(newcomer) – Village of Channahon made up the field of competitors. All of them did an outstanding job.
Congratulations to Jeff and David for finishing 3th and 4th
respectfully. As we went into the final
championship round, it came down to Randy and Kevin. Both had a few issues in the preliminary
rounds but recovered to make it to the final round.
championship round, Kevin flew right through assembling his body but had to
slow down when he noticed the meter bottom wasn’t seating correctly! (You could see the sweat on his
forehead!) Prior to the competition,
Kevin told me that, if he won, he was going to Denver to be in the national competition…..
hmmmmm. At the same time, Randy was
running a smooth operation at his table putting his Badger meter together. At the 57:35 mark (raw time), Randy had his
meter together and his hands up while Kevin finished with at the 59:41 mark
(raw time). What is "raw time” you ask? "Raw
time” is the time before any penalties are added after the meters are
tested. That’s right, our highly
trained, specialty testers (Randy and Todd) had the last say! Penalties are issued for things like missing
parts, leaking and/or non-working meters, etc.
Unfortunately, Randy had several penalties added to his time giving him
a final time of 1:35:35. Kevin’s final
time of 59:41 proved to be the winning time with no penalties! Congratulations to Kevin Zook, the 2013 ISAWWA
Meter Madness Champion! (This was his second championship in the last several
years!) Remember what Kevin said before,
he will be on his way to Denver to represent the Illinois Section at the National
Meter Madness contest.
Next year will be here before you know
it. For the 2014 competition, Neptune
Meters will be our sponsor. They will
supply meters for practice and competition.
Remember, you don’t have to be involved with water meters – anyone can
compete! I look forward to seeing all of
you next year at the competition (we already have two competitors signed
up!). If you need to contact me, please
email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
