Where did 2013 go?
We are now in the last quarter of the year and WATERCON14 is less than 6
months away! The time has gone by
quickly because there is so much going on!
First, I had the opportunity to participate in the 2013
AWWA Summer Workshop in July in Denver, Colorado. The Summer Workshop brings together Section
Staff and volunteers from all over the country to collaborate to make the
Association (AWWA) better and to share ideas that can be implemented at the Section
(ISAWWA) level. I met Section
representatives from Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Texas, Arizona, and Wisconsin,
as well as Association staff from the Denver office. The most interesting part was talking to other
sections about things they are doing and realizing that Illinois Section is on
the leading edge with the benefits and opportunities being offered to the
Second, AWWA held the 2013 Distribution System Symposium
and Emergency Preparedness Conference in Itasca in September. It was the first time that I had the
opportunity to attend this national conference. The conference started on a good note with an
interesting, entertaining and informative opening session by Tom Powers (and
Barrett Murphy) from the Chicago Department of Water Management. The Great Lakes Cup Tapping Competition was
held on Monday night of the conference.
Both men’s and women’s tapping teams competed. Thank you to all the volunteers from ISAWWA
who helped throughout the conference.
Third, the Fall Visitation Day is being held in
Litchfield Illinois. I am looking
forward to attending the golf outing on October 10th and the tour of
the new lime softening and microfiltration water treatment plant on October 11th. Since
this publication will be issued after Visitation Day, hopefully all who were
able to attend had a good time. Please
consider hosting a Visitation Day at your facility in the future.
Finally, we are knee-deep in planning for
WATERCON14. The WATERCON14 Technical
Committee met a few weeks ago and selected the abstracts that will be presented
at the conference. Just a note to the
presenters, the schedule for completion and upload of you presentation is
January 15, 2014 which is earlier than in years past. Please get your presentations in on time. Start
now so that the deadline does not creep up on you after the holidays!
One last thought -
ISAWWA cannot thrive without volunteers.
If you currently volunteer, whether it is on a committee, presenting at
WATERCON or in any other capacity, thank
you! If do not currently volunteer,
please consider volunteering. A listing
of current committees can be found on the ISAWWA website at www.isawwa.org. If
you have any questions about how to get involved, please feel free to contact
me: 630-820-1022 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
