Young Professionals Committee
Brian Kooistra, Young Professionals
last few weeks have been a wild ride for the YP Committee. We broke ground on Lunch
with the Boss, a ‘concept’ event designed to be forward-looking, aspirational,
and career-focused. And not looking to get away from what we know, we have a
big tour and a multi-organization happy hour in the forecast.
things first, Lunch with the Boss went off without a hitch. Our inaugural boss was John Spatz (former
Commissioner of Chicago’s Department of Water Management, and the current
General Manager of DuPage Water Commission).
The event turned out better than I had hoped. Spatz managed to pull off a water department
version of ‘Behind the Actors Studio’. I
definitely picked up some insights about how to get ahead through John’s unique
perspective of working with large municipalities. The Lunch with the Boss idea strives to take
leaders in the Section and transfer some proven knowledge and experience to
members that may be facing certain issues for the very first time. Thanks again, John Spatz, for giving us
something to aspire to and to consider.

The YP Committee’s next big event is a tour
of the Chicago's South Water Purification Plant (SWPP). SWPP has been in service
since 1947 and is the second largest conventional water treatment plant in the
world. As with most major plant tours,
registration closes several days before the event for security purposes, so be
sure to sign-up by October 25th or get left on the wrong side of the
