A Literature Review and Survey Study of Anaerobic Digestion Foaming in Wastewater Treatment Plants

Anaerobic digester (AD) foaming is one of the most common operating problems in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) that implement sludge processing using AD. This study will attempt to address various open engineering and process problems and solutions in AD foaming by the way of critical review of published literature from various sources. In the current state of research, there are few resources for operators experiencing AD foaming problems. Based on a critical literature review of the current information available, the goal is to systematically identify knowledge gaps and investigate factors that play an important role in foaming in AD systems. This is the first step toward the overall goal of a comprehensive foaming prevention and control guidance document. Specific gaps in current knowledge of AD foaming are determined and listed along with proposed specific steps to fill knowledge gaps in future tasks of the project. Based on all the literature reviewed and the gaps in knowledge compiled, a foaming survey was developed and disseminated to full-scale WWTPs to elicit information on AD foaming. The methodology and findings of this investigation are presented and the gaps and needs identified from literature review were further refined.
