SummaryActive mixing in drinking water storage tanks has become a proven tool for improving water quality in potable water distribution systems. Active mixing can reduce residual loss, water age, prevent tank icing and, when combined with active ventilation or aeration, remove DBPs from finished water.

In the summer, high temperatures exacerbate the layering and separation of cold and hot water inside tanks (thermal stratification). Hot, stagnant water settles at the top of the tank as a fixed strata as tank water levels rise and fall – causing excessive water age and residual loss. Biofilm growth accelerates as water quality decreases with disinfection byproducts often inadvertently produced as operators attempt to boost tanks with manual addition of chlorine. Nitrification can also result with tank dumping as a sole remedy.
Despite best efforts in treatment plants, THMs continue to form as a function of time and naturally occurring organic materials in water and pipeline assets. Without mixing as a base strategy, THM control in distribution networks is impossible.
Active mixing provides continual circulation – distributing residual to all corners of a storage tank so that the entire volume is homogenous in both temperature and chemistry. For summer heat, active mixing fully incorporates the cooler, residual-rich water entering the tank to overcome thermal stratification and combat disinfection byproducts formation. In the winter, mixing circulates the warmer water entering through the inlet pipe to prevent ice damage in the upper region of tank. This presentation will point to real-world case studies and data that underscore powerful tank mixing as an important and necessary step to water quality improvement and distribution asset protection.
