SUMMARY: Restrained joint polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe has been used in both sewer and water main applications since the 1970s. Trenchless construction techniques such as static pipe bursting and horizontal directional drilling have been using PVC pipe since the early 1980s. Using PVC with these trenchless methods can reduce installation costs, and can greatly increase the life expectancy of the system. According to a study done by the American Water Works Association (AWWA), PVC has a lifespan upwards of 100 years. Some restrained joint systems are completely nonmetallic, meaning that they possess the inert properties of PVC throughout the system and are not susceptible to premature corrosion. PVC has also been recognized by the governing authorities to be NSF 61, or potable drinking water.  Certa-Lok has been used as locally as Elmhurst, Illinois and in Minnesota. These case studies will be discussed in detail.
Restrained joint PVC is an excellent option for your municipality’s next trenchless construction project.
