Design, Operation and Maintenance of Radium and Ion Exchange Water Treatment Systems

CEU TYPE: Technical
IEPA#: 9069

I. Radium Treatment and Deep Wells
Radium is a naturally occurring contaminant in many ground water supplies. The location of this natural contaminant is based upon the geography of the facility and well depth. We will initially cover the Well development work and considerations when locating a new source in regions with Radium present. The second part of the presentation will review the treatment approaches for Radium in facilities along with design considerations that may impact the plant location, system tie-ins, and monitoring.
Operation of the Radium treatment facilities will also impact the plant personnel. We will review the design considerations, monitoring points and troubleshooting recommendations.

II. Ion Exchange Principles and Monitoring
Ion Exchange systems for water treatment have been successfully used for over 50 years. We will be reviewing where Ion Exchange may be applied for Hardness, Radium, or Nitrate reduction in drinking water applications. Successful operation of an Ion Exchange plant relies upon the proper monitoring of the regeneration process, throughputs, and water quality. This training will review the steps in monitoring a treatment facility as well as trouble shooting recommendations
