Mentoring Student Groups Effectively on International Projects

CEU TYPE: Technical
WEBINAR TYPE: Technical
IEPA# 9527

Presenter: Ann-Perry Witmer, PE

Ann-Perry Witmer, PE, earned her engineering degree from the University of Illinois after a lengthy career as a journalist, then consulted in Wisconsin as a drinking water engineer before returning to Champaign in 2014 to join the University of Illinois College of Engineering faculty. She has worked with and founded a variety of service organizations to help disadvantaged international communities obtain and maintain safe drinking water, and has led teams of students to work with communities in need in Central America, Africa and Asia. Along the way, she’s developed a methodology for engineering sustainable water systems for communities in need that she teaches on the Urbana campus.

We all know how to provide safe drinking water to the communities and clients with whom we work in the United States, but how different is it working with partners in the developing world? Many of the design and operation strategies we use here simply don’t work in parts of the world where water is a precious commodity, and the stripped-down approach to working with communities in need may seem counter-intuitive to seasoned water professionals. If you’re interested in mentoring volunteer groups such as Engineers Without Borders, here’s a primer that will help you to know identify strategies that work and don’t work in other parts of the world.
