Chair-Elect Report

Theresa O'Grady

Every year WATERCON seems to creep up on me. It seems so far away in the fall, then there is Christmas and the New Year and now WATERCON is just a couple of months away!

At this year’s WATERCON, I am co-presenting a talk; so my co-presenter and I have spent the past few weeks putting the finishing touches on our presentation. Each time I prepare and give a presentation, I have a greater appreciation for the volunteers who give presentations year after year. It is a lot of work to put together a presentation!

While ISAWWA staff puts in countless hours preparing for WATERCON, WATERCON would not be the great conference that it is without the too-numerous–to-count volunteer hours spent by the WATERCON Committee, the MAC Committee, the presenters, and all the other committees with tracks at the conference including YPs, Small Systems, Source Water Protection, and Backflow. So thank you to all who volunteer to make WATERCON a successful conference!

ISAWWA staff and volunteers are constantly trying to make WATERCON better for ISAWWA members. There are several new things at WATERCON this year – Hydrant Hysteria, Minute to Win it contest, and Stretch Your Education. There are also a couple of new events from last year returning – Mission Impossible, Career Fair and Logo Hunt. As always, there are the returning favorites – Tapping Contest, Meter Madness and Top Ops. I am looking forward to WATERCON and hope to see you there!

Besides WATERCON, another initiative that ISAWWA is diligently pursuing is the education of "total water”. As announced in October 2013, ISAWWA adopted a new strategic plan (following AWWA’s new strategic plan) which encompasses the concept of "total water” – not just focusing on drinking water but rather looking at water in all of its forms – drinking water, stormwater and wastewater. Since one of ISAWWA’s primary goals is providing education for its members, an ad hoc committee was formed to develop a strategy for the implementation of education on "total water”. Committee members were selected from a cross section of ISAWWA members – manufacturers, engineers, and utilities - who are all involved in more than just drinking water. The Committee met in November 2013 and decided to poll the membership to determine the needs of the membership with respect to "total water” training. By now, you should have received and completed a survey about training needs related to "total water”. Once we have reviewed the survey results, the committee will meet again to determine which areas of training will be targeted. So look for "total water” training coming in 2014!
