District 1 Trustee Report

Ashley Bernard

A new year and new goals! Another year of water professionals retiring and knowledge and experience leaving the drinking water industry! How do we rebound from this? We rebound from this through youth and our young professionals outreach about the drinking water industry. How do we reach our youth and young professionals? By educating our elementary, secondary and college students on the importance of water through literature, in school presentations, and science fairs.

In an effort to educate our youth and young professionals on the essential functions and importance of our most precious resource, drinking water, the City of Rockford Water Quality employees visited a local elementary school in an effort to increase community support and awareness. On December 18, 2013, Nadine Miller (Water Quality Supervisor) and Larry Pierce (Water Quality Technician) took advantage of an opportunity to introduce 5th and 6th grader students at St. Edwards Elementary School to water. They presented groundwater theory and the groundwater model which follows water from the aquifer (production) through the water system (distribution) to the customer’s tap (customer service). The event was well received and the City of Rockford personnel look forward to future community outreach opportunities.

Local Science Students Learn about Groundwater, December 18, 2013

Our youth and young professionals are our future! We should continue to educate within our schools as a return investment in the drinking water industry. They could be our future water operators, water inspectors, water quality technicians, distribution maintenance workers, water engineers, production supervisors or water superintendents. There will always be an ongoing need to deliver a reliable supply of safe and high quality water to our communities! Investing in our youth and young professionals is a wise thing to do.
