Illinois Section AWWA - E-Splash - November 2013

Education Committee
Jeff Freeman, Chair

Welcome to Fall! At the onset of Fall we get a couple of nice changes, such as moderate temperatures and changing tree and shrub colors. As we progress through Fall, those leaves start to fall, temperatures continue to drop and the hint of snow starts to become a reality. Before you know it, the end of the year holidays will be upon us. Fall presents a great time of year to get some education sessions in prior to the holidays and the day-to-day schedule changes winter weather brings to the Midwest.

The ISAWWA Education Committee is working hard to continue to line up educational opportunities for you. Prior to getting into the upcoming education sessions, I want to say thank you to the presenters, exhibitors, volunteers and attendees who made the 2013 Meter Symposium a success. There were 115 attendees at the symposium, which was held on August 1st in Countryside. The attendees enjoyed seven technical presentations on meters. The attendees also had the opportunity to speak with the ten onsite exhibitors. We have received positive feedback on the Meter Symposium and are now thinking it could be an annual event. If you have any comments on this year’s symposium or suggestions for future symposiums, please let us know.

I am happy to report our 2013 Annual Regulatory Update was a success, as well. It was held on October 3rd in Elgin. There were speakers from several state agencies, ISAWWA & AWWA representatives who monitor state and federal regulatory activities, as well as a couple of other folks who spoke on current and future regulations. We had over 160 onsite attendees who were able to learn a few things and secure over seven (7) continuing education units from this seminar. While technical difficulties put a roadblock in our plans to live stream the seminar on the Internet, we are able to send DVDs of the recorded event to the nearly 50 offsite registrants. With $40 being the cost of admission for onsite association members and $20 for offsite Association members, I think you will agree it was a great value.

The Education Committee continues to work on developing the Operator Day Track for WATERCON. The theme will be "This Old House”. We are working on securing presenters who can speak about the many different perspectives (i.e. owner, operator, regulator, engineer, etc.) on Water Works System improvements. We are working with some folks to fit into this theme, but are in need of more. If you have gone through a recent major water works system improvement, whether it was new construction or rehabilitation, please contact us so we can provide a forum to convey lessons learned to your fellow water professionals. If you know of someone who has recently been through a project, please send us their contact information so we can twist their arm until they agree to present. Don’t worry, we will keep your information confidential if you so choose!

The Education Committee and the ISAWWA staff continue to work hard to coordinate training sessions for you. We are starting to work on programming training sessions for the first half of next year. Please recall our many formats for training, including one hour webinars (live and on-demand), one hour Engineering Power Hours, three to five hour in-person seminars and multi-week classes, to name a few.

Lastly, and most importantly, WELCOME BACK LISA! After enjoying some quality one-on-one mommy time with Kylie, she is back at it. I am glad she was able to focus on Kylie’s first few months in this world, but I am also glad she is back with the Association. I look forward to working with Lisa and the rest of the Education Committee to continue to provide high quality educational opportunities. A big thank you goes out to Laurie, Sandi and Marianne for picking up the slack while Lisa was enjoying her time with Kylie.

Please remember we are always looking for training session ideas. If you are interested in presenting a topic, or there is a topic that you would really like to learn about, please contact Lisa Hoffhines and let her know your thoughts. Lisa’s e-mail address is If you ever have any comments or questions about the Education Committee and/or education program, please feel free to contact me at or 630-466-6700.
