Illinois Section AWWA - E-Splash - November 2013

Water Distribution Committee
Owen Keenan, Chair

Itasca, Illinois, was the center of the water distribution universe from September 15 to 18, when the AWWA Distribution System Symposium – Emergency Preparedness & Security Conference was held at the Westin Hotel. The last time the DSS conference was held in the Chicago area was in 2004.

This international conference was a big success due to the efforts of ISAWWA staff members Laurie Dougherty and Sandi McGinnis, as well as ISAWWA Chair John Van Arsdel, ISAWWA Vice Chair Theresa O’Grady, and many other ISAWWA members who volunteered their time to man the ISAWWA Membership/Distribution Booth in the Exhibit Hall, who served as Local Hosts monitoring the technical sessions, and who presented on various distribution and security topics for the Technical Program. However, there is one ISAWWA member that I would like to give special recognition to because, without his efforts, this conference would not have been as successful as it was.

Mike Ramsey, who is an invaluable member of our Water Distribution Committee, served as the Local Host for this conference. For the past nine months, Mike has worked very hard with Chair Randy Moore and other members of the 2013 DSS Planning Committee to resolve all the details related to hosting a conference like this.

Leave it to Mike to make his own unique mark. Mike organized the first water main tapping contest ever held at DSS! The Great Lakes Cup was, in my slightly prejudiced opinion, the highlight of the DSS Conference! Seven tapping teams from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana competed in this contest, and …. MIKE MADE IT WORK!

Mike’s own tapping team, the "Crankers” from the Village of Westmont, competed against the Village of Arlington Heights; the "Dirty Bores” from the Village of Itasca; the "Mad City Tappers” from Madison, Wisconsin; and the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana, in the Men’s division. Also competing in the Women’s division were the Land of Lincoln Lady tappers and the City of Lansing, Michigan, Lady tappers. Arlington Heights won the men’s division, and Lansing Michigan, won the women’s division.

While watching the tapping teams compete at the Great Lakes Cup, I felt very proud to be a member of ISAWWA, and I’m certain that many other people also felt the same way. GREAT JOB MIKE!

Last but not least, I want to welcome back Lisa Hoffhines to the ISAWWA office after having her first child, Kylie. (Our Vice Chair, Scott Bernholdt, had no one else to pick on while Lisa was on maternity leave.)

Best wishes to all of my fellow Water Distribution Committee members as well as our fellow ISAWWA members.
