Illinois Section AWWA - E-Splash - November 2013

Water For People
Dennis Ross, Chair

By the time this issue of Splash is in your hands, I hope you are thinking about WATERCON 2014. It may seem a bit early for us to be planning our calendars for 2014, but trust me it is not. As with most conferences we have our regular events, which is great. Who can deny the excitement of meter madness, top ops, the tapping contest and much more? But I would like to draw your attention to another tradition at our conference - the silent auction. Each year we ask our attendees to bring something to the conference to be sold to the highest bidder, all to benefit Water for People. I trust everyone is well aware of the fantastic work done by Water for People. If not take a peek at their web site Let me give you a quick glimpse of what Water for People is trying to change: 1.8 billion people don’t have access to a glass of clean drinking water. There is much more on their web site about projects and success stories. But as you read this think about the 1.8 billion people that get their water from a mud filled hole, with no ability to treat that water before they use it as their water supply. Women and young girls are given the task of walking several hours each day to get this precious resource, one we take for granted in our own homes.

What does this mean to you? There are some great ways to be involved while attending Watercon. Let me list them out for you, and there is no doubt you can be involved in one or more of these things:

1) Buy a raffle ticket each night of the conference.

2) Bring a new item worth $50 or more to the conference to be placed in the silent auction.

3) Bid on items in the auction. Don’t get mired down in looking for a great deal when bidding (although there are plenty of them), think about the good your donation is going to do for someone without the great fortune of safe drinking water each and every one of us takes for granted

4) Volunteer. My personal goal is to get the Water for People Committee in ISAWWA active. Help out with the auction, sell 50/50 tickets, or join the Committee.

Don’t have time to shop for an item for the auction? Contact the ISAWWA office. Sandi would love to do the shopping for you. Of course she will put your name on it and you will get all the credit. Speaking of credit, while placing your bids, remember the ISAWWA will gladly accept a check, major credit card or even cash.

I know there are plenty of great causes out there, but when I think about the many communities without proper water and sanitation it deeply touches me. That connection of what we do every day for our customers, mostly without thanks or acknowledgement, and then think of a 12-year old girl that can no longer attend school because it is her job to walk 3 hours each way to the local mud pit to retrieve the families’ water for the day, I think "let’s change that”.

Want to get involved? Send me an email. Together we will change someone’s life!
