Intelligent-Based Process Control System for Optimization of Nutrient Removal

Municipalities are facing tighter nutrient effluent requirements. These requirements are forcing the operators to gather and interpret more information in order to optimize the system's performance. Advancements in technology have allowed the development of intelligent-based software in conjunction with on-line monitoring of the process parameters. This combination provides continuous diagnosis and guidance to enhance the biological nutrient removal capabilities and optimize the chemical addition in an activated sludge system. This presentation will focus on the process management system's ability of managing the process environment and automatically adjusting the system to the influent conditions. The importance of fast response to changes in the influent conditions and the operation and maintenance benefits that it offers will be highlighted.

Manuel de los Santos - Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc.

Manuel possesses a M.S. degree in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering from the Universidad de Cantabria, Spain.  He also has a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez UreƱa, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Manuel has worked in the wastewater treatment industry in application engineering since 2000 with skills in design, application and technical support for biological processes and membranes.  He also possesses two years of consulting engineering experience in the construction field.
