Youth Build Lake County (YBLC) has launched recruitment for its Career Access program which targets Lake County residents age 17-24 that have earned their GED or possess a non-traditional high school diploma.

The following Career Pathways are available:

·        Drinking Water Operator in Training (OIT)
·        Heating Ventilation & Cooling
·        Information Technology
·        Forklift Operator
·        Public Utilities
·        Automotive
·        Trades and Apprenticeships

Students earn up to $75.00 per week for training, and paid tuition for selected pathways.  YBLC assists students in developing a career pathway plan based on their interests, abilities, and assessments. YBLC offers additional training and support for students who choose to pursue in-demand industry certifications and training in the pathways included above.

In addition, all YBLC students obtain their Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour certification and complete the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core Certification.

As a result of the anticipated water supply operator shortage due to retirement, ISAWWA has partnered with YBLC to offer the drinking water (OIT) career pathway. While enrolled each student receives a 8 week paid internship via the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grant obtained by YBLC. Successful completion of the OIT pathway will prepare the student for the IEPA Class D OIT certification examination. Utilities are also needed to provide students with hands-on experience through internships or apprenticeships.
