The ISAWWA Operator in Training program is designed to provide high school students with an educational background and hands-on technical skills that count toward Class D Water Operator Licensure with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA).  

The educational portion of the program is offered as an independent study through Kirkwood Community College’s online platform. The course was designed to give students a working knowledge of potable water distribution systems including water storage facilities, operation and maintenance of water mains, water quality issues, disinfection, and safety.  

Hands-on training is provided by a local utility during which students will gain experience in pumpage, storage, and water distribution.
