Title/Position: Water Utility Manager Community/Company: Village of Gurnee What's your primary job? - I oversee water and sewer operations for the Village of Gurnee. This includes managing capital projects, routine maintenance, and leading an incredible team of 10 maintenance and lead maintenance workers. How long have you worked in the total water industry? - 23 years in total water, 26 in public works. How did you get involved in the industry? - It was luck that I became involved in the water industry. When I was hired at Gurnee they placed me in the water division despite my previous streets experience. I learned as much as I could as quickly as possible, and fortunately received opportunities for education and advancement along the way. What sets you apart in the industry? -There are a lot of remarkable people that are truly inspiring in the water industry. Personally, I am a very detailed oriented person that works well under pressure. I am also content working hard in the background or in whatever capacity needed. |
What do you enjoy the most about being involved in the industry? - I enjoy knowing that the work we do in the total water industry has a significant impact in every person’s life. Second to that is the great network of professionals. Because of the demands and increasing regulations, it feels like we are all in it together. The people I’ve met and friends I’ve made are always willing to share their knowledge and experiences. What is the best piece of advice you've ever received or have given to another person? - Seize every opportunity. If you wait until a situation presents itself to prepare for it, you've waited too long. What's your idea of a perfect day? - A perfect day would involve working collaboratively with other departments to advance an initiative for public good. I would take time to coach or impart some knowledge to a newer, less experienced employee. I would see our team succeed in completing a large maintenance program or find a solution to a difficult problem. Fun Fact - I’m an avid outdoorsman. I enjoy fishing, ice fishing, canoeing, hiking, backpacking, golf, disc golf, skiing, and cycling. I've hiked both the tallest mountain and deepest canyon in Colorado. I’m always up for an adventure! |
