SUMMARY: Water distribution systems are critical in providing safe, reliable, and affordable drinking water to the communities they serve. Keeping the distribution system in good working condition requires constant attention to many factors. In this presentation water main replacement planning is examined along with the impact of water distribution systems on water quality, water loss, and public perception. The financial impact of a robust main replacement program can be significant. So, options for funding such programs are also discussed. All these factors are pulled together with several case histories of how communities are addressing the need for water main replacement planning.
