SUMMARY: Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&ID) are important documents that provide a wealth of information about the instrumentation and devices that are used to control and monitor treatment processes; however, reading and understanding them can be a bit daunting as the information often seems confusing and arbitrary. We will identify the standards from which most P&IDs are developed and take a brief look at them to get a better understanding of P&ID symbology and terminology. Once we have an understanding of the symbology and terminology, we will review several example P&IDs.
