SUMMARY: The dictionary defines a generation as: “all of the people born and living at about the same time, regarded collectively” Members of a generation are influenced and shaped by experiencing the same events within a given time period. Some sources have slight variations in the year ranges for each of these generations. It’s important to note that we will be discussing trends and characteristics, but like any generalization, they may not apply to everyone within a given generation. There are currently five generations in the workplace: Traditionalists, aged 79+ in 2024, who often are the people at the highest leadership positions in the workforce, Baby Boomers (many of whom are continuing to work post age-70, Generation X, Millennials, and Gen-Z. The next generation is the Alpha Generation, the oldest members of which are about 12 years old in 2024. We will focus on four generations in this presentation.
