08/04/21 Bringing Water‐aving Innovation to Utilities of All Sizes
A Water Distribution Committee Sponsored POWER HOUR Webinar IEPA#16214

CEU TYPE: Technical, Water
WEBINAR TYPE: Technical
IEPA#: 16214

SUMMARY: Hundreds of billions of dollars will need to be spent to replace pipe mains in the United Sates over the next 25 years. In the U.S., more than 200,000 water main breaks occur each year not including non-surfacing leaks. This leads to a typical utility water system having a water loss rate of 15% and higher.

Non‐revenue water includes real and apparent losses. These losses result in negative impacts including revenue reductions that reduce the utility’s ability to invest in the system, wasted water and energy resources, and/or limiting new development projects due to supply scarcity. Surfacing water leaks and large main breaks are highly visible, very costly, and can compromise the confidence that ratepayers, communities, elected officials, regulators and the media have in the utility.

Since 2016, Utilis has been providing satellite‐based leak detection services to over 250 customers worldwide. These customers ranged from medium to large utilities. Smaller utilities were not initially targeted because their sizes made the costs outweigh the benefit because of Utilis’s set cost to purchase one satellite overpass.

Beginning in 2019 with a referral to a small utility in Wisconsin from Utilis customer, Green Bay, Utilis has launched a project to provide many small utilities in the same geographic area with access to the same innovative technology that was previously out of their price range.

In spring 2021, Utilis is releasing a new product, called MasterPlan. MasterPlan allows utilities to receive a survey of their system using the same satellite technology, but with additional analytics performed so that a deficiency score from one to five is assigned to every pipe segment. This data layer can then be conveniently imported into any risk model for asset management planning. A case study from this product will also be presented.
