INTRODUCTION TO ALTERNATING CURRENT MOTOR STARTERS
CEU TYPE: Dual Credit Technical (DCT) Water Training Classification: Pumps & Hydraulics Wastewater Training Classification: Pumps & Motors
IEPA#:19319
TOPIC: This class will cover the basics of single-phase and three-phase alternating current (AC) motor starters that are used in 120 volt and 240-volt nominal single-phase systems and 240-volt and 480-volt nominal three-phase systems. We will start with some very basic single-phase and three-phase AC motor fundamentals that are important for understanding how and why motor starters work. Once we have the motor fundamentals down, we will cover four basic types of motor starters: single phase motor starters, three-phase full voltage non-reversing and full voltage reversing starters (FVNR and FVR), three-phase reduced-voltage solid-state starters (RVSS), and three-phase variable frequency drives (VFD). In discussing each type of starter, we will cover how to select the appropriate motor protection features to prevent a motor from being damaged by overloading, loss of phase, overtemperature and other conditions. We will also discuss the installation of motor starters and how they can be applied as individually mounted motor starters, in custom manufactured motor control panels, and in manufacturer standard motor control centers (MCCs). PRESENTER: Brent Studnicka, Strand Associates
CHECK-IN & HOURS: Check-in begins at 7:40 am. The training will start at 8:00am and will conclude by 12:00pm. Earn up to 4 dual credit technical hours for water and wastewater operators or 4 Professional Development Hours (PDH's) for engineers.
