04/17/23 Mission Monday: The Latest in Conducting Corrosion Control Studies

Welcome to Mission Monday! Mission Monday is the Illinois Section’s new webinar series designed with our mission in mind:  providing resources for the advocacy of safe and sustainable water through enriching membership, mentoring, and increasing public awareness. The education that you receive from this series is focused on the topics that you need to continue to supply safe and sustainable water to all of Illinois.  Once a month we’re bringing education to you on the topics you need the most. This series is free for our members and $25 for non-members. Not a member? Join today at AWWA –  www.awwa.org/join.

SUMMARY: Corrosion Control Studies (CCSs) for lead and copper reduction have been conducted since the early 2000s. With the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR), the EPA and many states developed guidance on conducting CCSs. The first phase of this was a desktop study which often involved flow diagrams and check lists. Since then, desktop studies and CCS evaluation methods have evolved significantly. Furthermore, the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) and IEPA require more efforts in desktop evaluations when changing treatment and source waters or exceeding various lead or copper levels. Additional phases of a CCS often referred to as demonstration studies have also evolved and do not look at all like the 2000 LCR guidance.

In this presentation we will review the latest science and methodologies in preparing desktop studies and conducting demonstration studies including scale analysis, solubility studies and harvested pipe studies.
