You save lives everyday.........

Posted By Laurie A. Dougherty, Friday, November 16, 2012
As a water professional, when people ask you, "what do you do?", your answer should be......" I save lives." What you do everyday saves lives. The fact that you care that the water you produce is safe, sufficient, clean and tastes good, is a job that we could not live without. If we didn't have you, we would not be able to survive and thrive.

A young professional recently took a plant tour and here were his observations....

"You know, I had never considered the prospect of working as an operator at a water treatment plant, because I had always assumed it would be a boring and easy job, but after actually visiting a plant and talking with you about all the issues to consider and optimizing them, I get the feeling that it is very dynamic, challenging, and enjoyable. The fact that you are doing a service that directly impacts people's daily lives is awesome. Also, it is very community focused, and I really like that. I am the kind of person that needs a job where I can really connect to people, so I am now highly intrigued with working at a WTP. I have always been really interested in applying water treatment to development work, because I know I would connect with the people that I work for, and I am passionate about serving the poor."

Sometimes people looking at what you do gives you a fresh look at your own job. Do you realize that is how your job is viewed? Have you shared the details of your job with the upcoming generations in your family and friends circle? Being a water professional is one of the most important jobs there is. You should take great pride in what you do and the next time someone asks you what do you do? Tell them, "I save lives everyday." Thank you for what you do.
