Member Spotlight -Zach Jardine

Title/Position: Utility Maintenance Superintendent

Company/Utility: City of Warrenville

What's your primary job? - I am the responsible operator in charge of the city’s water system and am responsible for technical and administrative work in the maintenance and operation of the City’s water production and distribution, and wastewater collection and conveyance facilities.

How long have you worked in the total water industry? - 24 years

How did you get involved in the industry? - I commenced my professional journey in 2001 with the Village of Oswego, where I immediately engaged in the water industry, focusing on underground water and sewer repairs. My responsibilities included the maintenance and operation of eight deep wells and four water towers. This role was fulfilling as it involved physical work while also presenting mental challenges related to community growth, water sourcing, public engagement, and the overall satisfaction of collaborating with others in the water sector. Currently, I serve as the Utility Maintenance Superintendent for the City of Warrenville, where I oversee four shallow wells and three water towers. I am also involved in the development of a new water treatment facility and the construction of a new 500,000-gallon water tower. Our water system encompasses nearly 80 miles of water main, and on the wastewater side, I manage 60 miles of sewer main and 11 sanitary lift stations.

What sets you apart in the industry? - I believe my unique journey in the water industry distinguishes me from others. I began my career as a maintenance worker and advanced to the roles of supervisor and then superintendent. This progression has provided me with comprehensive insights into all facets of utilities within public works.

What do you enjoy the most about being involved in the industry? - My greatest passion for the water industry lies in its commitment to community service. I have always found fulfillment in addressing the interests, needs, and welfare of the public.

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received or have given to another person? - "The way someone treats you is a reflection of how they feel about themselves."

What’s your idea of a perfect day?My ideal day would start at 3 am, with a workout wrapped up by 5 am. After that, I’d enjoy breakfast with my family and spend the rest of the day sailing in the Caribbean Sea together.

Fun Fact – I have been married for 19 years to my high school sweetheart, have 2 beautiful girls and amazingly energetic son.
