Member Spotlight - Michael morris

Title/Position: Director of Sales, Marketing & Business Development

Company/Utility: LangeTech Inc.

What's your primary job? - As the Director of Sales, Marketing, and Business Development, I’m responsible for aligning our services with client needs and driving growth strategies within LangeTech. I enjoy working closely with our clients and partners to develop innovative solutions that enhance system integration and efficiency in the water and wastewater sectors. It’s rewarding to contribute to such essential services, knowing that our work supports communities and public health.

How long have you worked in the total water industry? - I have been a dedicated member of AWWA since 2006. Over the years, this membership has been invaluable, helping me build lasting professional relationships with customers, manufacturers, consultants, and contractors. Through AWWA’s career development programs and resources, I’ve expanded my knowledge and gained insights that have enriched my work. Additionally, AWWA has opened doors for me to network with industry professionals across the country and around the world, connections I might never have made otherwise.

How did you get involved in the industry? - My journey into the industry has been shaped by a diverse career, where I’ve had the opportunity to learn, develop, and provide solutions across various sectors of I&C (Instrumentation & Control) and System Integration. It all began in the US Army, where I learned the trade of performing calibration and control systems related to electronics, physical & dimensional measurements, RF, and nucleonics. After my military service, I transitioned these skills into the civilian workforce, working with clients in industrial, commercial, and municipal markets.  As I moved forward in my career, I came to realize that the future of the water industry will require increased attention and innovation, especially in light of growing challenges related to water scarcity and quality. I believe that the industry must continue to adopt cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices to address these challenges head-on. My primary focus is on innovations in automation, instrumentation, data analytics, networking, and security—all of which play a crucial role in improving the efficiency and reliability of water management systems. By advancing proven technologies and best practices in water management, I hope to contribute to securing a reliable and sustainable water supply for generations to come.

What sets you apart in the industry? - My approach centers around truly listening to clients and understanding their unique challenges. By doing this, I’m able to develop tailored solutions that not only meet their needs but also anticipate potential issues down the line. I believe in partnering closely with each client throughout the process, ensuring that they feel supported every step of the way. This collaborative, solution-oriented approach is what I believe sets me apart in the industry.

What do you enjoy the most about being involved in the industry? - I truly enjoy the relationships I build with clients, contractors, and colleagues. For me, these connections go beyond business; they become genuine friendships grounded in trust and mutual respect. Each project becomes more than just work—it's a collaborative journey where everyone feels valued, and that shared confidence allows us to achieve great results together. These relationships are what keep me passionate about what I do every day.

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received or have given to another person? - The best advice I’ve received—and often pass on—is to always listen more than you speak. In any field, but especially in ours, understanding the client’s needs deeply is the foundation for developing effective solutions. By truly listening, you can uncover insights that might be missed otherwise, allowing you to address both immediate concerns and future challenges. This approach builds trust and leads to lasting partnerships, which is something I value immensely in my work.

What’s your idea of a perfect day? – A perfect day for me starts early, just as the first light begins to creep over the horizon, and I’m out in the stillness of the woods, ready for a day of deer hunting. There’s something incredibly peaceful about those quiet, early hours spent immersed in nature. It’s not just about the hunt but the chance to step away, clear my mind, and appreciate the outdoors. Afterward, I’d spend the day with family and friends, maybe firing up the grill and sharing stories. Wrapping up the day feeling accomplished, connected, and recharged would make it a perfect one.

Fun Fact – When I’m not out hunting, fishing, or cruising the trails in my SxS, you can usually find me building decks and docks, putting my passion for the outdoors to work in every project. Whether it’s an afternoon spent teaching my grandkids how to fish, hunt or taking them on camping trips, I’m always looking for ways to share my love for nature and hands-on projects with the next generation.
